Hey,
I flip websites. I’ve flipped businesses, social media accounts and more. I used to do eBay flipping every year around the holidays, too.
Something about it, that just draws me.
What about flipping a Medium account?
I was asked this by a big publication a while back. They were wanting to exit and had no idea if or how they could sell it.
While I’ve never done this, I believe I’ve seen flipped Medium accounts and I’ll tell you how you can tell, plus, how you can do it.
Let’s go!
What does flipping a Medium account mean?
Well, you start a Medium account, write content, gain a following, maybe even monetize it with MPP.
It’s a valuable digital asset.
Thinking of selling it is natural, I think.
Just like flipping a domain or website.
How to do it?
Determine the value
Find a buyer
Sell it
If you’re considering doing this, the first thing I would do, is review the Medium TOS to see if this is even possible.
You’re looking to see if there’s verbiage saying you cannot transfer the Medium account or you can’t sell it, etc.
If it’s a green light, this is how I’d do it.
I would sell it as part of a business.
So, this could include, for example:
A Medium account + Medium subscribers
A separate email list or Substack account
A blog or website
A social media account
Once you have your business bundle ready, including Medium account, it’s time to sell it!
Where do you sell Medium accounts?
The first place I would start is with your personal network.
You could send an email to your email subscribers sharing that you are considering selling it and ask for any interested parties to contact you, if they want to make an offer.
The second place I would go, is a business marketplace.
By now, you should have a general idea of what you want to sell your Medium account for. If you don’t, that’s totally fine.
Working with a brokerage or marketplace platform for business sales, they will help you come to a value and price you want to sell.
If you have an idea of your number and it’s 5 figures or more, depending on the assets included in the sale, I would use a broker like Empire Flippers or FEInternational (there are others).
If below 5 figures, Flippa will work.
You’ll set up a website listing for sale and then, sell!
The time to sell really varies.
It could take weeks or months.
Transferring assets to the buyer
It’s about handing over your Medium login. Simple.
Depending on any other assets included in the sale, you’d hand over login or do some sort of transfer.
For example, if a website is included, you’d transfer the domain, site files, etc.
Is this being done? Selling Medium accounts
I really think so.
There are accounts I have followed for years that have completely changed.
Now, changing over your profile pic, profile description, promoting a new business, and other changes doesn’t necessarily mean you sold your Medium account.
But, this coupled with a different style of writing, no mention of the original author, a niche switch and other changes, kind of point to a change in ownership.
I think this happened with a very known Medium writer in the make money online niche, that has recently had some ugly stories written about on the platform.
I’ve seen publications change ownership a bunch of times on Medium, too. I wonder if any sale or equity split or anything like that happened with the change.
Do you know of any Medium flips or Medium account sales that have happened?
Is this something you would do?
Share your thoughts.
Have a great day!
Best,
Jenn
